In-Person at Moonstone Counseling – Westlake
Carly Bassett, LCSW-S
Join us for a unique, hands-on workshop that blends creativity, cultural symbolism, and clinical insight. Through the lens of traditional Japanese icons—including Daruma dolls, origami cranes, Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms, and more—you’ll explore new ways to support goal-setting, resilience, and transformation in your clients and yourself.
This 3-hour CEU workshop includes guided creative activities, such as painting your own Daruma doll and writing a personal haiku, along with reflections on how these practices can be adapted for therapeutic work. Perfect for clinicians seeking a refreshing and meaningful approach to client engagement and professional renewal.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Define the cultural significance of the Daruma doll and describe its use as a metaphor for goal-setting in therapeutic work.
Identify at least three Japanese cultural symbols (or personal symbols) and apply these metaphors to support client resilience and narrative work.
Demonstrate three creative strategies (Daruma decorating, origami crane folding, haiku writing) that can be adapted into therapeutic interventions for clients experiencing trauma, burnout, or life transitions.
Engage in reflective practice by creating a personalized haiku poem and Daruma doll centered on their own values and professional goals.

Resilience, Renewal, and the Way of the Daruma:
Creative Goal-Setting Through Symbolism
Inspiration: Hi, I am Carly and I am fresh off of my first visit to Japan this summer, and what a sensory experience it was! My inspiration for this workshop was actually born in 2007, when I spotted this round little statue with one eye that sat on a shelf in one of the counseling offices at my final MSW internship site.
What I know know to be the Daruma Doll, became a symbol for me at a time in my life when I had big dreams and goals. Since then, the Daruma Doll has shown up in my life many times and I can’t help but appreciate the even deeper symbolism that exists for me knowing that I first saw it in that counseling office so long ago.
Putting it into Practice: It is time to get creative and have some fun, while also earning a few CEUs! While in Tokyo, I stumbled upon a shop called, Happy Daruma, and engaged in creating a personal Daruma Doll with my daughter. It was such a great experience and I would like to share that with you, too.
This three-hour experiential workshop will involve creative opportunities for you as a professional that you can incorporate into your work with clients, but will also help support your personal goals and dreams. I look forward to our time together! ~Carly
We honor the deep cultural roots of the Japanese symbols explored in this workshop—such as Daruma, origami cranes, and cherry blossoms. Our intention is to approach these elements with respect and cultural humility, using them as doorways into conversations about resilience, transformation, and meaning. We do not claim ownership of these traditions and strive to engage with them ethically and thoughtfully.
